Congressman Jared Huffman has just released draft public lands legislation for Northwest California. Developed in collaboration with a coalition of local businesses, landowners, biologists, conservation organizations, hunters, and anglers, this proposal would protect our wild lands and rivers and expand recreational opportunities while restoring watersheds and managing for fire.

Congressman Huffman wants to hear from members of local communities across the region. Make your voice heard at one of the four town hall meetings he has scheduled to discuss this legislation.

• Please come to the meetings and voice your support or
• Send Huffman an email stating reasons this trail should be included in the legislation. Talking points might include:
  • The Bigfoot Trail will help encourage tourism in rural communities throughout Northwest California. Specific trail towns along the BFT include Hayfork, Junction City, Weaverville, Etna, Seiad Valley, Houchi, and Crescent City.
    • User information is still  in its early stages of collection but at least 30 folks have thru-hiked the trail over the past 4 years while another 50 have day or section hiked parts of the trail.
    • If the current trends in long-distance hiking continue and recognition for the BFT continues to grow, we predict an average of 100 hikers attempt the trail each year in addition to hundreds of section/day hikers by 2025.
  • The trail was originally envisioned by Michael Kauffmann as a celebration of the biodiversity of the Klamath Mountains. The designation of the BFT as a National Recreation Trail will help nurture a greater understanding of the biodiversity in the Klamath Mountain Geological Province as well as a stewardship for the region’s importance.
