California’s Little Grayback Trail

On a northbound hike, just after reentering California at the State of Jefferson Scenic Byway (which I like to call the Bigfoot Highway), Justin Rohde has been working to improve a Forest Service trail that eliminates several miles of road walking.  He says of the route:

The trail is still challenging in places but there is flagging and cairns, etc. With more regular use this year it is becoming a nice trail. The road south of the trail has some nice views of Indian Creek and Mt. Shasta. At the top of the defunct logging road there is an old FS sign and the trail’s  junction with of 18N30.

If you take the alternative route (still under construction from this junction to Poker Flat), follow the flagging south around the knob to the ridge line and old road. Then follow the old road south to the very end, at a landing. To the left, go east through an old logging area to a faint trail heading southeast up to a spring. Continue past the ridge, then bushwhack or follow the flagline south to Poker Flat.
